In January 2000, Jenny Cox organised a residential weekend for concertina band at Hawkwood College, led by Dave Townsend and others. This is now a successful annual event, and since 2002 has benefitted from the conducting skills of brass and wind band leader Steve Ellis. All but one of the 23 players on this album are Hawkwood regulars, and the music is chosen from pieces we have enjoyed at other Hawkwood meetings. For variety and to avoid fatigue, most of us play lower or higher instruments on different tracks. We are a community band, though we are scattered across the country and cannot meet every week and perform regularly as the old bands did. We share their enthusiasm for stretching our abilities and working with expert conductors. The keystone of this recording was our sound engineer Robert Harbron, as we worked for six long, concentrated, magical spring days in the Cotswolds.
